Not only coats but all leather goods are made from one 4 grades leather. These grades are full grain top grain split grain & bonded. The highest quality & usually highest priced grade leather top grain. The lowest quality & usually the lowest priced leather bonded grade. We will take look at each these grades below starting with the highest quality & working downward.

Full grain leather the choice for the highest quality leather goods. Full grain leather made form outer layers the hide & not processed or sanded except to remove hairs. This preserves the beauty the natural leather & its markings. Overall full grain leather the most desired because its beautiful appearance coupled with its durability & strength. Full grain leather reserved for the highest quality leather goods so unfortunately full grain leather coat will be the most expensive choice. If you can afford or if you get lucky & find full grain leather coat on sale then you will have beautiful premium coat you are sure to love wearing.

Top grain leather strong leather can be fashioned into exotic imitations. Top grain leather less expensive full grain & made form outer layer hide. It processed & sanded to cover up imperfection. This outer layer the hide durable so top grain leather very long lasting even if the look not as luxurious full grain leather. Since processed the leather may be fashioned during this process to imitate exotic skin such as ostrich skin or alligator. If you are seeking leather coat made from such an exotic skin you can save money by buying an imitation made from top grain leather.

When leather goods carry the label genuine leather usually an indication the product made from split grain leather. This type leather comes form inner layer hide & not as strong as top grain leather but stronger than bonded leather.

Bonded leather the least expensive leather on the market so if you want to save money on your leather coat this might be the option for you. It not the best terms durability however. Although the coat appears to be made from single piece leather bonded leather actually made up leather scraps have been bonded together. Therefore the most fragile leather but has the advantage being the least expensive also.
