Gold and Sacramento
by William Holliday
California rife with major cities but few get the attention they deserve. International tourist destinations like San Francisco Los Angeles & Newport Beach seem to dominate talk California. The same can be said quaint college towns like Berkeley Davis & Irvine or alternative lifestyle meccas like Big Sur & San Francisco again seldom does the capital the Golden State get its due.
Named by the Spanish army officer Gabriel Moraga Sacramento was little more than trading post when John Sutter arrived 1839 from Switzerland. Within ten years he & his heirs would guide the transformation the trading post into military barracks for the U. S. Army & eventually into an incorporated city. Sacramento the oldest incorporated city the state having been invested 1850. This does not mean the oldest however as distinction belongs to Monterey.
The capital California was moved from Monterey after the defeat Mexico during the Mexican-American War 1846-1848 . The first city to be designated the new capitol was San Jose. When the state legislature met there 1850 was argued the capitol should be moved further inland to avoid retribution either from Mexico or the Spanish Empire.
Two years earlier James Marshall famously discovered gold the American River Coloma about 50 miles away from Sacramento. In the years followed Sacramento became the inheritor the California Gold Rush. The city flooded with new residents & economic prosperity. As evidence Sacramentos growing importance the Transcontinental Railroad terminated the city solidifying stature as the gateway city to California.
The capitol was moved finally to Sacramento 1854 following brief stints Vallejo & Benicia. Taking advantage the citys tremendous infrastructure & rail access the Constitutional Convention named Sacramento the permanent capitol California 1879. Inspired by the nations capitol the California State Capitol was not actually completed until 1874 where stands to this day tribute to the vision & foresight John Sutter.
